Pairings/Characters: Gen; Hilda; three Norman Rockwell characters, two female and one male.
Rating: General Audiences
Length: 2,356

Theme: Female Relationships, Crossovers/Fusions, Female Friendship, Gen, Old Fandoms, Small Fandoms, Stranded

Summary: Hilda’s fishing trip is struck by rain and then by two new acquaintances in need of assistance.

Author’s Notes: For [archiveofourown.org profile] moonlight69.

I needed to introduce a few additional characters to Hilda’s mainly single-panel world, so I did a mash-up with Norman Rockwell’s “Fixing a Flat.” Think of it as the Illustrationverse.

Reccer's Notes: A rec posted in honor of the U.S. Full Strawberry Moon, for reasons that will be apparent in the fic.

Moon Custafer constructs a story from several Hilda panels (plus a special guest Norman Rockwell work), in which Duane Byers’ zaftig hillbilly wood nymph comes to the aid of two travelers stranded in the boondocks—a predicament complicated by a less friendly local. (A temporary problem-solving alliance (particularly against a common enemy) can count as a relationship, right?)

Hilda as portrayed in Byers’ artworks seems to embrace solitude, and the scant fanfic I’ve seen doesn’t tend to show her interacting face-to-face with much of anyone but her animal friends and the odd Authorial Proxy; it’s fun to watch her socializing, and to see her given family, friends, enemies, and a history. (As well as actual clothing that she presumably wears now and then to pick up her crackers, trashy novels, and repurposable-as-clothing floursacks.)

The way Raylan carries himself doesn't help, and when Tim's eyes close, Raylan's swagger plays on repeat against Tim's eyelids.

"Stupid cowboy," Tim mutters, although there's no one around to overhear — he's not back in the barracks, isn't trying to keep quiet in a hostile household.

A/N: For Unconventional Courtship. The Harlequin Romance I picked was Never Tempt A Lawman by Lauri Robinson

Book Summary
Western Kansas, 1866

Steady, wealthy and oh-so-safe—that's the kind of husband Bess Trundale wants. Someone like the local banker's son. Someone unlike Sheriff Kirk Landers. The lawman's confident swagger gets right under her skin…and into her fantasies. And though she's tried to ignore the chemistry surging between them, one night is about to change everything.

Kirk isn't planning on being anyone's husband ever again. But months of living under the same boardinghouse roof as quick-witted, feisty Bess have stirred desires he can't ignore. Together they could put their pasts to rest and claim a bold, passionate future—if he can tempt her to break all the rules with him….

Overly Complicated Gorge Trip: Bingen

I was taking the bus over to Bingen when I saw the words 'Report Paranormal Sightings Here' out of the window. I immediately started tracking where it was in relation to where I was staying, and as luck would have it the bus loop back around and my stop was just two blocks up the slope from it.

There is a laptop on the table to type in your reports there. Also love the sign with info on the reports and the... everything.

I've never heard of the Klickitat Ape Cat and I'd be 0% surprised if they made it up themselves to add some extra flavor to the area, but I don't care. I believe in the Klickitat Ape Cat.

The place is an outdoors store, which is basically a convenience store with goods meant for people hiking or climbing in the area. They carry trail food, pack soap, etc. Theirs was also a paranormal center and pot shop. Perfect, 10/10, no notes. My 'if I win the lottery' dream has long been to open an outdoors store, but I never considered adding paranormal center into my business plan. Their actual reality outshines my dream plans.

So far I'd stayed at a perfectly maintained mid-century sprawl and a semi-basement that felt like an obscure form of punishment. And the third and final place is...

Bougie Capsule Hotel. Or you consider it like a hostel, but hostels typically operate under special rules and have exceptions to the rules hotels and inns have to follow. This had none of that stuff, so I tended to not think of it as more capsule vibes.

Way more my speed. I stayed where because my train was super early and this was right by the station and I've always wanted to stay here for a night. I thought an upscale capsule/hostel seemed amusing. I had a great time. Jury is out if I'd do it again because the bunk area is pretty packed. Things went well, but it's a risk. One couple there had a crock pot and was making a spicy bean soup and also had the door propped open to keep the smell down, but that meant the bunk area was fully open to passersby. I wasn't stressed by it because the smell did dissipate and I kept my bag with me, but it's easy to see how easily one overly entitled person can wreck everyone's stay in the bunk area. Super glad I checked that place off my list.

There are normal rooms and even private cabins with hammocks. Also, a general hammock area:

White Salmon didn't go well, Bingen was amazing. Bingen delivered.

Then my return train was actually on time and I got back to Portland.

Overly Complicated Gorge Trip: White Salmon

I decided to be in the Gorge for a few days, explore, stay at a place that I could work from. This did not turn out to be a great plan. The historic hotel I stayed in looked cute and had WFH areas inside and out, but my room was terrible. There is no way it was one of the original rooms. This was a converted space with no charm, 6 overhead lights controlled by 4 light switches spread around the room, the desk area was cramped, the window didn't open and the panes were covered in a thick plastic for privacy. Since it's a very sloped area, my room in the back was partially underground. It also smelled like dog. I woke up my first morning there and was like 'wtf, what am I doing? Maybe I should grab a bus back to Portland'.

On my Welches trip I stayed in a tiny converted space that was way smaller and worse than every other room there, but I'd also chosen that room and paid a lower rate. I did no such thing here, this was a regular booking. So I have no idea what why I got put in that space.

But, I'd paid for it so I stayed and made the best of it. The weather was nice, the air clear and I was in the Gorge.

View stepping out of the hotel:

I wound up going back to Hood River for a bit the day I changed to my final hotel:

What-ho all

Name: Zan
Age group: 40s but rapidly heading towards 50s
Country: UK
Subscription/Access Policy: Public, at time of writing

Fannish Interests: Right now I'm mainly into Djo, Stranger Things (as my icon suggests, I'm having somewhat of a Joe Keery year), The Terror, Severance, and my attention to the MCU has been revived somewhat by Agatha All Along, Thunderbolts and (hopefully!) Fantastic Four.

I enjoy reading golden age detective fiction, fantasy, romance and historical non-fiction. I've written a small number of fics but am trying to get out of a block and write some more.

I've been a long time but mostly lurky presence in fannish spaces since the early 2000s, and can also be found as zan77 on tumblr

I like to post about: Not many posts on my dreamwidth yet but I'm hoping to use it to get back into the habit of longer posting.

About Me/Other Info: Outside of fandom I'm also an amateaur bellydancer and enjoy crochet. As I officially enter Fandom Old territory I've started to yearn for the old Livejournal style interactions of my youth! Hoping to find some like-minded souls to talk to.

Wearing our vintage misery--no, I think it looked a little better on me

I am deeply snotty this morning, with a slight tickle in my throat. I don't think it's anything except allergies, but it's annoying. I'm just going to drink my coffee and see where I am in about 30 min. If need be, I can buy some Ricola to coat my throat.

Yesterday was a busy day. I had work, then farmer's market, then over to the pharmacy. Yet again, it occurred to me what a little hermit I've become. The farmer's market is precisely two exits in one direction and the pharmacy is 3 exits in the other. But going out feels like such a foreign thing these days. Especially things that require me to go towards our old neighborhood like the pharmacy does.

That area feels alien now. I lived there for 52 years, but after 6 months away, I don't feel like I belong there anymore. It's a weird feeling.

I bought way too much at the farmer's market. I have white turnips, beets, radishes, and a whole load of baked goods.

Tonight, I believe I shall make the turnips. I'll save the greens for another day. Maybe I can cook them up later in the week--after I look up some recipes, The big question will be whether I want to cook them with some potatoes, or just mash them up as is.

My packages have slowly started to trickle in. I got my shirts from Torrid, and my sister and Jess' new water cups. Jess' tshirt "trans rights or I bites" with a pissed off possum showed up. More stuff is going to be coming the rest of the week.

I moved the dogs grooming to the weekend of 6/21, because it was on Pride Weekend, and htat would have been insanely difficult.

I've got a full weekend this week. first up, on Saturday, I'm working the Trans Pride booth for Hopkins. Then, immediately afterwards, we'll have a game, then I crash and Jess has a game in the evening. Sunday, I'm going out for lunch with a friend, and then in the evening, we have another game.

But first, I've got three more days of work to get through.

Oh, we also built our dresser yesterday! We finally have somewhere other than shelves to put our stuff. It fit right in our closet. We look so organized at the moment! I have an underwear drawer! It's lovely. We have one more thing to build--a file cabinet to go beside my desk where I can put some of my stuff and the printer.

The fucking pantry is still unavailable from IKEA, so I suppose I'll start looking elsewhere. Annoying. I really liked that combo. It would have worked so well in the space.

Okay, time to go forth and get myself together. Everyone have an awesome Wednesday!

Square Peg in a Round Hole

Posting here because I haven't in years, and I struggle to find people who share even one or two interests with me, so the suggested template doesn't fit me any better than most things. I'll use what I can of it, and I apologise for being very rambly. :)

Name: [personal profile] sweetsorcery

Age: well over 18

I mostly post about: Writing, Fandom Events (Exchanges, Challenges, etc.), Life and Health Challenges. After that, it gets murky, because I often want to post about the many, many things that interest me and then just talk to myself about them instead, because my tastes couldn't be less mainstream.

What are these interests: Writing M/M (see fandoms), Victorian and Edwardian Ghost Stories/Horror/Weird Fiction, Golden Age Adventure Stories, Audiobooks and Vintage Radioplays, WWI and WWII (specifically British Military History, Aviation, and Naval warfare), British Social History from the Victorians through to the middle of the 20th Century, Ancient History, Art (esp. Romanticism, Neoclassicism and Surrealism) and Architecture (esp. Art Deco, Tudor, Jacobean), Archaeology, Ancient Egypt, Paganism, Spirituality, Reincarnation, Mythology, Folklore, Parapsychology, Taoism, British Dance Bands from the 1920s - 1940s, Baroque Music (incl. Opera very selectively), Romantic Era Music, Pop from the 1950s - 1980s, Dancing (sadly mostly passive these days), Romantic Poetry, Old Movies (I say 'old' instead of 'classic' to avoid confusion, because again, my favourites are pretty obscure to most people and include a lot of War Movies), Silent Movies, Age of Sail, etc.

My fandoms have been many over time, but these are the ones I'm most likely to read/write now and in future: Biggles - W E Johns, Famous Five - Enid Blyton, Vienna Blood (still on my first run-through of the TV series, but loving it), Kidnapped - Robert Louis Stevenson, Vintage Ghost Stories (I keep adding to the list of inspiring ones to write about), Vintage War Movies (ditto), 18th and 19th Century RPF, Ancient Egypt RPF

I'm looking to meet people who: share one or more of my eclectic interests

My posting schedule tends to be: What is a schedule?

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: You might assume from my old-fashioned interests that I'm rather conservative. Nope, not unless it comes to wishing people were still polite and well-spoken. Think of me as a kind of Ariadne Oliver type... and if that means anything to you, we might get along well. ;)
While I don't post or read about Politics if I can possibly help it, please keep on your side of the enclosure if you're homophobic, transphobic, racist, ableist, anti-science, anti-personal freedom, supportive of fascist regimes, or prone to diving down conspiracy theory rabbit holes. If you don't believe in the motto "Live and Let Live", we won't get along; that extends to writing too, because while I don't write anything needing AO3 archive warnings, you'll regularly find themes and pairings in my writing that offend conservatives and antis. Also, you must be over 18 too - I don't censor my writing or my posts.

Before adding me, you should know: I'm a Pisces with a Scorpio ascendant, and an INFP, so I'm consistently spinning day dreams and easily distracted. I avoid conflict, but I have claws/pincers for emergencies. I'm agoraphobic and aegosexual.
I have CPTSD and Fibromyalgia, and I do talk about that. I mention this because it's cost me "friends" before, so if you easily get sick and tired of people whose daily life mostly consists of being sick and tired, and who sometimes need to vent their grief about that in their own journal, you might like to avoid me. It's unfortunately part of who I am, but I promise, I don't post detailed medical horrors. If I do post about it, it's usually as an apology for disappearing for a while and under a cut.
I sparingly use generative AI art to help me visualise literary characters of whom no proper visuals exist, but I don't use AI in writing. I don't claim AI art as my own, and fandom icons are about the most public use I make of it; if you're going to lecture me on that, please just move on.
I get hyper-fixated and will post about my fixations at length with the least amount of encouragement.

Summer falling through our fingers again and you were the sunshine of my lifetime

Happy Tuesday! We got Monday over with! Monday wasn't terribly bad for me. Busy, but not overwhelming. Towards the end of the day, I was just filling in spots where people had cancelled, and then working on the PET Scan queue. Which just means calling people to get their (usually cancer related) very expensive scans. On a good day, I manage to give people the illusion that Hopkins is magic, because I'm doing it as the doctors put in the orders, so for some of them, I'm literally calling as they are leaving the doctors office. It's good, because it makes them feel like we're really looking out for them, and concerned about their well being. (Which to be fair, we are. See also: cancer patients.). For some of them, they just got their cancer diagnosis, and my heart always aches at the thought of how much they're going to have to go through over the next months. Some, it's just a yearly thing to confirm that they're still cancer free.

So when dad's money came in, I had a little spending spree. And now, all the packages are comeing in. Today and tomorrow may be a bit of a deluge of things. Next week, all the Temu packages come. I've actually really liked the furniture we've gotten from there. It's been much sturdier and better made than some of the pieces we've gotten from elsewhere.

Yesterday, after work and dinner, we went over to IKEA to check out the Bookcase/sideboard combo that we were looking at for our kitchen pantry. I really like the one that I chose and it feels like it could be sturdy enough to hold all of our stuff. I got a couple of containers for the potatoes and onions, which can sit on the floor next to the pantry. Of course, this morning, when I went to put in the order, it says no delivery spots are available, so I'll have to see if any open up. I'm definitely not going to be picking it up in my Kia Soul.

If that doesn't change, I might have to reconsider.

After we viewed the sideboard, we proceeded to the cafe, to pick up a dessert and have some of their delicious pear water whiel we waited for our Too Good to Go order. Holy shit y'all. They just went through what they had left at the end of the night and boxed it for us. We have salad, we have salmon, we have chicken tenders, sides, baked goods, you name it.

We're definitely having a good lunch, and for $19, it was a hell of a lot of food.

Okay, time for me to consider waking up. I'm thinking about a nice hot shower to wake me up. Everyone have an outstanding Tuesday!
